There are a number of reasons why wheat and gluten products may be avoided in the diet.
- Most frequently it is people who suffer from coeliac (pronounced 'seeliac') disease who require a strict lifelong gluten-free diet.
- However, those with the skin condition known as
dermatitis herpetiformis also need to eat gluten-free foods. While it is estimated that coeliac disease affects 1 in every 250 Australians, dermatitis herpetiformis is much rarer and is seen mostly in people who also have coeliac disease.
- Other people avoid wheat because they have an allergic reaction to it -
Wheat Allergy or Food Intolerance.
